Mave IPL FAQ

What is the difference between IPL and Laser hair removal?

The main difference between IPL and laser is the type of light used. IPL or intense pulsed light, is a broadband pulsed light, whereas laser is a single monochromatic light source. IPL and laser technologies both target the melanin in the hair follicle and you can expect permanent results from both. Energy, frequency and hair colour are all determining factors in the efficacy of the treatment, while the light source, whether it is a laser or an intense pulsed flash light plays a minor role.

Does Mave IPL work on all skin types and hair colors?

Sadly, not all hair and skin types are a match for IPL treatment. Typically, IPL and laser hair removal won't do the trick for blonde, red, or very dark skin. Peek at our nifty chart below for more details

Is the treatment painful?

Compared to shaving, waxing, or laser hair removal, IPL hair removal is typically safer and less painful. This is due to IPL utilizing a multi-spectrum bulb rather than a single-wavelength laser. Some individuals may experience a slight tingle in sensitive areas during treatment, but it is usually not painful.

Is the hair loss permanent?

Expect about 80% hair removal from the treatment plan. Zap those hair follicles in 'anagen' phase, but beware, some sneaky hairs may still sprout. Keep up with maintenance every 1-2 months!

Can I use my Mave IPL over tattoos?

The short answer is no. The light energy will be more attracted to the pigments in the skin than the melanin in your hair, which can lead to bad skin reactions. You should always use your Mave handset around your tattoos. To prevent potential skin reactions, it is recommended to avoid using the Mave handset on areas with tattoos, as light energy may interact differently with pigmented skin.
